We Were Born Tigers

5. The Shagbots – We Were Born Tigers

The recurring theme for 2009 appears to be anything “fun”. The Shagbots are another Calgary band that know how to rock you to the core – exceptional at giving their audience something different and fulfilling.

The XX

4. The XX – The XX

As The XX’s self-titled debut hits your eardrums, a blanket of a soothing darkness will swallow you whole.

Exploding Spiders

3. Secret Broadcast – Exploding Spiders

You want rock? You got it. Secret Broadcast are genuinely kind and devoted to their fans, and they know exactly how to please them.

The Fast Romanitcs

2. The Fast Romantics – The Fast Romanitcs

Calgary’s music scene is busting at the seams with some pretty great rock groups this year. This self-titled album continues to find its way back into the player for repeated listening.

Questamation

1. Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker – Questamation

Ash Buchholz and Jason Parsons (also known as Human Kebab) have put together a tightly knit ensemble, not to mention an album that’s a lot of fun. Bucholz sings a lot about love and the battle of understanding oneself, but what separates him from most other artists is he manages to pinpoint these feelings with his masterful choice of words. That’s a rare occurrence, and it’s always reassuring.

Fantasies

Metric – Fantasies

Metric’s singles this year were somewhat impressive, but when it came to the album’s deep cut, it was a disappointment. Their first two albums are currently their glory days, but the misstep of Fantasies doesn’t mean this band’s days are over.
