Mastodon – The Hunter

Rating: 3.5 / 5 Reviewer: Greg Hutton In the months leading up to the release of The Hunter, Brann Dailor of Mastodon suggested that the album would move away from the grandiose, high concept prog-metal of their previous effort, Crack the Skye, and instead hearken back to Leviathan-era riff-centric rock. With that in mind, it’s [...]

Queens of the Stone Age – s/t

Rating: 4 / 5 Reviewer: Greg Hutton Although Queens of the Stone Age’s debut record was originally touted as a group effort upon its release in 1998, it stands today as the closest example of how a Josh Homme solo album could be expected to sound. While Homme has unquestionably been Queens’ driving creative force [...]

These New Puritans – Hidden

Rating: 4.5 / 5 Reviewer: Greg Hutton Suppose you were to combine equal parts of the stark-yet-danceable post-punk of Joy Division, the tribal drumming of early ‘80s Killing Joke, the eclectic electronic pop of M.I.A. and, just for fun, abundant bassoon. Bleeding Through – Declaration

Rating: 3.5 / 5 Reviewer: Kait Bohan Declaration is Bleeding Through’s defining album, showcasing the darkest, most raw side of the band. Producer Devin Townsend’s influence can clearly be heard here, through the prominent drums and high-pitched vocals, this is no doubt an evolution in Bleeding Through’s sound.

Sex Pistols – There’ll Always Be England – DVD

Rating: 3.5 / 5 Reviewer: Trent McMartin Punk rock for the middle aged: filmmaker Julien Temple captures The Sex Pistols’ Brixton Academy shows in London last fall, as singer Johnny Rotten sneers his way through much of the set list, spouting off the occasional obscenity to the delight of the crowd.

Animal Collective – Water Curses

Animal Collective did a lot of things they’ve never done before on their 2007 release Strawberry Jam. Notably, they relied more heavily on electronic soundscapes and samplers than on their earlier, folkier work they largely got rid of their slower, more free-form dirges and they allowed pure pop melodies
