Mookie & the Loyalists – Mookie & the Loyalists EP

A ska album without trumpets or trombones, the eponymous EP by Mookie and the Loyalists is such an upbeat piece of work it’s almost exhausting to listen to, if not difficult to take seriously. Relentless pep needs variety and the occasional tonal shift if it’s going to work at all, and it doesn’t work here. The EP’s first five tracks are nearly identical, the only slow-ish bit is the closer, ‘Took Me By Surprise,’ and the band changes up their sound exactly once, on ‘Destination Nowhere,’ an homage to (or ripoff of) Odelay-era Beck. If you’ve been searching for a more aggressive Save Ferris, look no further.
