After catching opening act The War on Drugs with the rest of the Legion’s packed house, Dan Bejar casually strolled on stage. And from the opening strains of ‘Chinatown,’ the first track from Destroyer’s gloriously bizarre album Kaputt, he had everyone’s utmost attention. Flanked by a saxophone and trumpet, the band expertly pulled off Kaputt’s unique blend of indie-rock and smooth jazz, with songs from earlier in Destroyer’s career being left no worse for wear.
Bejar’s stage presence was, perhaps against design, pretty entertaining. When not singing, he fell to his knees to swig alternately from a bottle of beer or a flask. Failing that, he banged on a tambourine with his back to the audience. His soft-spoken nature allowed him only to mutter a few muffled thank you’s to the crowd, which seemed more than enough to satisfy.
Saturday night’s in Calgary was Destroyer’s last until a European tour in June, but the band showed no signs of road weariness. This is a band that seems to be flying by the seat of its pants on stage, but is firmly in control.
