Taking the stage for a second straight sold-out night at Broken City in Calgary, The Wooden Sky and The Rural Alberta Advantage were as comfortable as a couple of veteran rock groups. After the crowd was properly warmed up by openers The Great Bloomers, The Wooden Sky took to the stage with all their fury – highlighted by an inspired cover of Tom Petty’s ‘American Girl.’ They were arguably the best band of the three on this night, which was accentuated by the fact that about a quarter of the bar cleared out after their set was over.
Those who left, though, missed a rousing set by Rural Alberta Advantage. Led by the gravelly vocals of Paul Banwatt, the band tore through most of their album Hometowns to the delight of the people that smartly stayed to see them.
Overall, this was one of the surprisingly buzz-worthy shows of this early year. Two sold out nights and people were still clamouring for tickets on message boards and even outside the venue on the night of the show. All three bands on this night proved to be worth the hype.
