Jason Collett’s fifth studio album might as well be called The Freewheelin’ Jason Collett. His Dylanesque vocal delivery still on display, Collett lets loose on Rat a Tat Tat, adding some kick to what was already a sound uniquely his own. His marble-mouthed folk-rock is infused this time with punchy baselines and sparkingly crisp production – thanks to his backing band/producers in Zeus.
To say that Collett is at his most confident on Rat a Tat Tat would be an unwarranted shot at his previous albums – 2005’s Idols of Exile and 2008’s Here’s to Being Here – but he does show off a dedicated swagger that he hasn’t previously. The two standouts are ‘Love is a Dirty Word’ and ‘Love is a Chain’ – the former sounding like the coolest version ever of Rupert Homes’ ‘Escape,’ the latter a four-on-the-floor folk-dance masterpiece.
While Canada continues to be a red-hot source of the hippest indie-rock, Collett is content to play the cool uncle. Rat a Tat Tat is the finest feather in his already impressive cap.
