Nina Persson’s new side project, A Camp, features more of the same whip-smart songwriting that is often on display in her other band, the underrated Cardigans. A Camp, though, leaves the grungier aspects of the Cardigans behind for a more theatrical approach, with big horn flourishes and Persson’s enunciated vocals.
Opener ‘The Crowning’ paints a vivid picture of a Victorian-era celebration (“slaughter the rabbits, the doves and the boars”), with Persson sniping her wry observations from the sidelines (“so let’s raise our glasses to murderous asses like you”). It’s a good indication of Persson’s appeal – she never sounds like she’s reaching just to keep your attention. ‘Stronger Than Jesus,’ ‘My America’ and ‘Golden Teeth and Silver Medals’ all contain searing one liners that most singers would kill to come up with once per album.
Bandmates Niclas Frisk and Nathan Larson are more than up to the task of sharing the spotlight with Persson – Colonia houses some larger than life pop songs, and the band’s immense personality and presence doesn’t come from the lyrics alone. For fans of clever storytelling and strong melodies, Colonia will be one of the year’s favourites.
