The Young Knives were a tad late to the great Gang of Four, XTC and the Jam revival of 2004. By the time they finally got there it was 2006 and many of the guests had either already passed out or moved down the street to the hipster disco. Being good chaps, The Young Knives made the best of it, had a good time and put out Voices of Animals and Men which wasn’t half bad, but sounded a little dated at the party which had been seriously contemplating finally taking the five albums that had been on repeat the whole time out of the stereo.
As time went on, more and more people left—packing the disco past its fire regulation capacity—but still The Young Knives remained, rummaging through the fridge for the Arctic Monkeys beer, eating the crushed remains of Bloc Party’s Doritos, making sure to step around Franz Ferdinand’s discarded used condoms and generally just carrying on like it was still 2004, or, you know, 1984. Eventually, while looking through the pockets of a corpse with a perfectly angular haircut the Young Knives found a Blur album and disappointedly threw it on the stereo. Though it wasn’t the pack of smokes they were hoping for, they soon realized it was a great find and allowed them to add a whole new dimension on the now revitalized three person party: 1994.
Out of this creative milieu they birthed Superabundance which also wasn’t half bad, even though there’s no longer anyone around to listen to it and if there were, they’d hardly be able to hear it over the seething, sputtering, spastic sound bleeding through from the disco. Still, they partied on, comfortably changing from late-arriving guests to ever-present hosts. One day, when the last of Maximo Park’s pizza boxes had been scrapped of their last smear of cheese The Young Knives stepped outside to find some food only to see the disco collapse after Does it Offend You, Yeah? obnoxiously shouted themselves to the entrance. Confused and frightened, The Young Knives abandoned their quest and returned to the party intent to wait it out until 2014.
