Two years after the release of his Juno award nominated project When the Angels Make Contact, Matt Mays is back together with El Torpedo, releasing their sophomore record Terminal Romance. The band deviates from their earlier work, shredding most of the country influences of their self titled record in favour of a straight up rock feel, but not without slipping in a few other interesting influences.

The most notable of these comes a third of the way through on the punk styled ‘Rock Ranger Record,’ which is perhaps as fun as the record gets, while ‘Digital Eyes’ comes in at a close second with Mays use of a seemingly borrowed Neil Young circa Trans voice synthesizer for some overdubbing on the tracks tail end. Adding further to Terminal Romance’s appeal are the likes of first single ‘Tall Trees,’ rock out number ‘The Hunter, The Hunted’ and the marathon length title track which stands as the record’s best.

Garnering more and more attention with each passing record, Terminal Romance is a solid effort that will only help in furthering Matt Mays regard. An upbeat record combining a number of influences without seeming overly broad and featuring no lulls for listener interest to trail off, Terminal Romance is a worthy addition to Mays’ expanding catalog.
