Martha Wainwright’s new album, I Know You’re Married But I’ve Got Feelings Too is built from the same building blocks as her eponymous debut. The emotional singer returns with songs of heartache, lament, and whimsy sung with the same folksie vocals and guitar. What’s new, however, is the noticeable time Wainwright has spent in the studio—the production value is top notch. There are many layers of drum machine beats, guitars, strings, horns, and Martha’s more refined, yet still haunting, vocal loops. However, these tricks seem to dissipate as the album progresses.
There is a lot of variety throughout the album. ‘Bleeding All Over You’ is classic Martha—vocal loops culminate into an emotional, gut-wrenching crescendo, which is coupled with Martha’s folk-guitar. The same could be said for the following track, ‘So Many Friends.’ ‘Jesus and Mary’ indulges in some electronics, and the album’s finale, a cover of the Eurythmics’ ‘Love is a Stranger,’ is transformed into a classic country song—but the disparate genres seem to adapt to Wainwright, and not the other way around.
Martha has taken a step forward by integrating some new technology, but the emotional tug from her debut has taken a small step back—it’s as if the studio magic has neglected her undeniable pathos. Still, Martha is in there, and fans won’t be disappointed.
