Jenny Lewis – Acid Tongue

On her debut solo release, Rabbit Fur Coat, Jenny Lewis solidified her position on the short list of best female vocalist out there today, joining other such contenders from that year as Neko Case and Melissa McClelland. On her second kick at the can, Acid Tongue, Lewis becomes slightly more diversified musically without losing as much as an inch of her lyrical and vocal touch.

Standing as the most obvious proofs of this musical shift are the fun, toe tapping number ‘See Fernando’ and Lewis’ answer to The Wings three-songs-for-the-price-of-one ‘Band on the Run,’ ‘The Next Messiah,’ which starts off as a blues number then shifts musical style twice from there during the eight minute track. Additional highlights that might not necessarily have been at home on Rabbit Fur Coat include the hypnotizing ‘Bad Man’s World’ and ‘Carpetbaggers’ on which Elvis Costello makes a guest appearance. Meanwhile the acoustic title track proves that Lewis isn’t turning her back completely on her previous roots.

With one of the most beautiful voices in music today, Jenny Lewis could easily choose to rely solely on that trait and quite likely do rather well for herself. Adding to that her musical and songwriting ability you get a masterful outcome, with which Acid Tongue and her records to come are likely to adorn best of the year lists for years to come.
