Back is producer Brian Ahern, the man who helmed the board for much of Harris’ 70’s and 80’s work, and there are some shout outs to the ghosts of country past – a patsy Cline reference in ‘Broken Man’s Lament,’ a cover of Merle Haggard’s ‘Kern River,’ and a guest appearance by Dolly Parton on ‘Gold,’ the most old-school country track on the record. But other than those slight deviations, everything here is pretty much standard contemporary Harris – the diversely unclassifiable Emmylou that first appeared on 1995’s comeback Wrecking Ball: ethereal backdrops accompanied by a sincere guise and hauntingly beautiful lyrics and vocal delivery. This woman transcends the confines of country and folk music. Hell, she transcends time.
