Carolina Liar – Coming to Terms

Carolina Lair has been described in a lot of places as “the next big thing.” I can certainly see that; their brand of safe, simple rock will always have a market. This is pretty typical pop-rock, complete with the slow-fast, soft-loud transitions.

On ‘Done Stealin,’ the singer confesses that he “has seen this movie once before.” The same could be said for all of these worn, safe ballads and simple rock songs. And, although all the songs are different, they all sound sort of the same. All too often, it is easy to picture the music video with the singer’s sad, rain-soaked face crooning away, and easy to imagine his semi-see-through white shirt.

Overall, Coming to Terms lacks that certain je ne sais quoi that separates good albums from great ones. There are some good moments: the ending of ‘Show Me What I’m Looking for’ has a nice choir finish, followed by the semi-bluesy ‘Simple Life.’ The opening tracks have some genuine toe-tapping moments, with some occasional synth drones. But, these moments are too few and far between.
