Barenaked Ladies have spent so much time writing and recording goofy (and occasionally stupid) songs for adults, a kids album is a natural and, frankly, welcome digression. Their increasingly stale act benefits from a much needed sugar rush on Snacktime, and allows the band to dive headfirst into the silliness they’ve flirted with on their “adult†albums.
Frontmen Ed Robertson and Steven Page have always had a way with words, and while the album is aimed at children, they don’t dumb themselves down to the point where grownups won’t get a kick out of some of these songs, especially ‘Crazy ABCs’ and ‘Raisins.’ There’s also some mid-song banter reminiscent of ‘If I Had $1,000,000’ proving, if nothing else, that the band is having fun.
Ultimately, Snacktime isn’t really that much of a stretch from the rest of the band’s catalogue. The band’s always underrated pop craftsmanship is intact and, if nothing else, it makes for one kids’ album that parents won’t go mad listening to on repeat.
