As far as the history of the rock super groups goes, 1988 saw the emergence of one of the ultimate such groups, The Traveling Wilburys. The rock legend quintet brought together Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty, and their debut release, Volume 1, would spawn such hits as ‘Handle with Care,’ ‘End of the Line’ and ‘Tweeter and the Monkey Man.’ Two years later, after the passing of Roy Orbison, Volume 3 was released and although it didn’t quite manage to match the caliber of its predecessor, it was fantastic in its own right.

And now, after a decade or so of only being able to get either of these releases on the shelves of second hand stores, Volume 1 and Volume 3 are once again available to the world, together in the form of The Traveling Wilburys Collection. Spanning two CD’s and a DVD, both albums appear in full along with two previously unissued Wilbury tracks and two more that didn’t appear on either album but were released as a single B-side and a charitable compilation track. And while the latter two, ‘Runaway’ and ‘Nobody’s Child,’ are both notable additions to the collection, it is quite apparent why the former two didn’t make the cut on either album, as they are both fairly average.

Lastly, in addition to the five music videos the Wilburys made for songs from both records, the DVD disc also contains a twenty five minute documentary on the making of Volume 1. These behind the scenes takes of the recording sessions and interviews with all five members of the band, as well as the music videos, provide the only real added incentive for picking this collection up for those that were lucky enough to have a copy from the nineties, but for everyone else who has waited years for this reissue, it is a definitive and complete collection and decidedly well worth the wait.
