To see Paramore’s Hayley Williams, it’s awfully tempting to peg her as the next competition for Avril Lavigne’s pseudo-punk princess crown. Despite being just 18 years old though, Williams is an old pro. Williams joined forces with brothers Zac and Josh Farro when she was just 13, and five years later the band releases Riot! as their second full length album.
Riot! is harmless fun almost all the way through. Paramore aren’t breaking any new ground here with their energetic pop-punk tunes, but Williams acquits herself well as a front-woman, and the rest of the band (filled out by the Farro brothers and Jeremy Davis), are a competent if not overly innovative backing group.
Paramore don’t do much on Riot! to separate themselves from their Warped tourmates, but pop-punk fans will at least be treated to Williams, who can carry a tune better than most of her contemporaries.
