When naming your band New Years Day, aiming for something fresh and new seems to be a prerequisite. Unfortunately for this five piece group out of Anaheim, California they should have made a resolution to show more originality on their eponymous titled EP

This is not to say that the band’s debut EP is bad, because there are some solid pop punk tracks here. ‘Razor’ and ‘Who We Are,’ showcase interesting writing and catchy hooks, and are at the least, well crafted. The problem is that for a new band trying to break through the legions of pop punk bands, they need to bring something different to the table. Most of their tracks sound like every other song featured on The O.C or Laguna Beach, and though they are far from the worst of the bunch, there is nothing here to write home to Orange County about.

Also featured on TVT Records is the Glasgow quartet known as The Cinematics with their EP Break. Starting out solidly with the 80’s new-wave dance-punk inspired title track, it is a slow crash and burn from there on in.

Suffering from too much melodrama and not enough clear cohesion, the rest of the album seems like too many influences packed in to only four songs. Reaching the final acoustic track ‘Home,’ the album has veered so far off course that it is not even clear you are listening to the same band. Diversity is generally applauded but some kind of cohesion is also important; something The Cinematics seem to have lost along the way by trying to be a jack of all trades and managing to master none.
