It’s probably a mistake that the chosen title of Michael Buble’s new CD, Call Me Irresponsible, could be misread as a desperate plea for acceptance as a rock star, still, it’s one of the all time great Freudian slips in Canadian music. Back in the days of Buble’s idols, crooners were rock stars, known for womanizing and alcoholism, and even though Buble can sing, his awkward miming is never believable and probably ventures closer to insult than homage.
Before all is said and done on Call Me Irresponsible, Buble destroys Leonard Cohen’s ‘I’m Your Man’ and manages to make Eric Clapton’s ‘Wonderful Tonight’ more boring than the original. He does include a couple of originals here, ‘Lost’ and ‘Everything,’ and while it’s probably a good idea to include some of his own songs and stop relying on already proven material, Buble still manages to seem like he’s singing along to somebody else’s words the whole time.
