Loney, Dear is Emil Svanängen, a Swedish born singer-songwriter with a lush artistic vision that goes far beyond just his music. His unique folk, which wouldn’t be out of place on the next Zach Braff-compiled soundtrack, comes off like an ambitious Iron & Wine, and occasionally scrapes the edges of emo, especially on ‘I Could Stay,’ on which he laments “there’s just so much to lose.â€
Fortunately, the rest of Loney, Noir steers clear of overwrought sentimentality in favour of quirky but simple melodies, overtop of sparse instrumentation. Svanängen’s high pitched singing voice might be a distraction on other projects, give him credit for using his unique sound to its full potential.
Loney, Dear is another in a long list of home runs for the newly revitalized Sub Pop Records.
