Loney, Dear is Emil Svanängen, a Swedish born singer-songwriter with a lush artistic vision that goes far beyond just his music. His unique folk, which wouldn’t be out of place on the next Zach Braff-compiled soundtrack, comes off like an ambitious Iron & Wine, and occasionally scrapes the edges of emo, especially on ‘I Could Stay,’ on which he laments “there’s just so much to lose.”

Fortunately, the rest of Loney, Noir steers clear of overwrought sentimentality in favour of quirky but simple melodies, overtop of sparse instrumentation. Svanängen’s high pitched singing voice might be a distraction on other projects, give him credit for using his unique sound to its full potential.

Loney, Dear is another in a long list of home runs for the newly revitalized Sub Pop Records.
