Newcomer Kevin Michael is an energetic injection into a sea of interchangeable young R&B crooners. Michael attacks his songs from more of a pop standpoint than a hip-hop one – despite impressive guest spots from Lupe Fiasco, Q-Tip and Wyclef – and the sunnier approach makes his debut album a pleasant surprise.
The album opens with the slow-building ‘We All Want the Same Thing,’ before breaking into the album’s most impressive moment, ‘It Don’t Make Any Difference To Me,’ a meditation on his biracial upbringing. From then on, Michael pretty much puts it in cruise control, and while the album is an enjoyable backdrop, it’s hardly a revelation.
The oddest thing about the release in the third week of October is that the album seems like it would’ve been destined for classic status if it had only been released at the beginning of the summer. You can almost hear sunsets and surf in Michael’s music, and the late fall release probably won’t help how the album is received.
