Finger Eleven has made a habit of constantly evolving from album to album, a trick they have gotten pretty good at. Unfortunately, doing it so many times on the same album is not something they have perfected, and the album ends up feeling like a fragmented offering. On the Canadian vet’s Them vs. You vs. Me, the group is back for their fourth album, which jumps all over the place from fast-paced energized tracks, to boring drab ballads.

Starting out strong with the catchy, well-written, dance track ‘Paralyze,’ the group takes a left turn a few songs later with the droopy ‘Falling on,’ and ‘I’ll Keep Your Memory Vague.’ The ballads on this album are what ultimately drags it down. They end up being generic, mediocre torch songs that seem all too uninspired. Even lead singer Scott Anderson soulful, intense voice can’t hide his boredom with the mushy messes that fail miserably to match up with the much stronger up-tempo songs.

The good side is the group have a penchant for well-written catchy pop-rock songs, and should stick to that instead of trying to get all deep on us. ‘Lost My Way,’ is a good radio friendly song and proves that the group have got more than just one good single on their otherwise middle of the road offering. This is a decent album and props should be given for the bands constant drive to evolve, but maybe next time they can save all their Darwinian drives for another album.
