On Cobra Starship’s last album, frontman Gabe Saporta imagined himself a rock star, singing about fame and success he had yet to achieve. Unfortunately for him, his prophecy didn’t quite come true, and now on Viva La Cobra!, he’s turned bitter on us.

The album’s first two tracks, ‘The City is at War’ and ‘Guilty Pleasure,’ skewer the fame that he courted so aggressively last time around, including diatribes like, “Here’s how it goes, it’s about who you know / and if you’ve got money then you get in for free” and “You sold yourself to make it / you can dish it, but can you really take it?” The focus of these songs is actually welcome, as both drive with an intensity and a purpose that the band seemed to be lacking, but it doesn’t take long for them to step back into what sank their last effort.

Delusions of grandeur plague the band again on ‘Kiss My Sass’ and ‘Smile for the Paparazzi,’ where they again pine for the fame that they denounce at the album’s opening. There’s nothing wrong with having conflicting desires, but to be so painfully unaware of them is startling.
