2007 is all set up to be indie rock’s year of triumph. Or, you know, its death knell. With new releases from The Shins, Modest Mouse, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Bloc Party out in just the first couple of months of the year, expectations from the skinny-panted worldwide are higher than ever.
Thankfully, not all of these bands are taking the same approach. Whereas The Shins took a step back and were more reserved on Wincing the Night Away, Bloc Party pushes forward on Weekend in the City with the same intensity that made Silent Alarm so powerful. Lyrically, though, the album is more mournful than it’s predecessor – Kele Okereke sings on ‘Kreuzberg,’ “I have decided at 25 / that something must change.â€
Whether by design or not, Bloc Party have smoothed their sound ever-so-slightly for this disc. Less angular guitars and brighter melodies cloud darker themes. This band is well on their way to distinguishing themselves beyond being just another British band.
