On their debut album, The Secret Life Of…, The Veronicas attempt to mix the pop-punk energy of Avril Lavigne with the sexy smarts of Liz Phair. And fall miserably short. While many of the album’s songs were co-written by The Veronicas (aka Lisa and Jessica Origliasso), the first two singles were penned by pop genius (or devil, depending on your viewpoint) Max Martin, the man behind hits from everyone from the Backstreet Boys to, well, Nsync. With that in mind it’s easy to know what to expect here. Smooth hooks and smoother harmonies, with virtually no substance.
At no point on Secret Life are The Veronicas as cute or clever as they think they are, which is really a shame, because the twin sisters from down under can legitimately sing, and what little energy the album has comes from the girls themselves, not the songs.
The Secret Life Of… is an inviting title, but once they let you in on the game, you might wish you never asked.
