The Apparitions second full length CD, As This is Futuristic, starts with a great deal of promise. ‘Electricity + Drums’ is a gut-shot of energetic guitar-pop, opening with charmingly fumbled harmonies and infectious hand claps, the song glides effortlessly through a soaring chorus. Unfortunately, nothing else on the album lives up to the early standard.

As the album goes on, The Apparitions’ glaring deficiencies take centre stage. Not the least of which are Mark Heidinger’s paper-thin vocals, which take focus away from the band’s competent musicianship. Most of the album’s melodies prove too challenging for Heidinger, as he frequently loses tone throughout the album.

There is a reward, however, for those persistent enough to make it to the album’s final track, ‘Positively Charged,’ which recaptures the spark that the band had found 10 songs earlier. A short minute and a half, the final tune leads you to believe that you shouldn’t give up on The Apparitions just yet.
