The make up of Shout Out Out Out Out reads like a horrible pitch for a Learning Channel reality series: two drummers, four bass players, two samplers, five synthesizers plus two vocoders adding up to an all out electro-pop dance-off. But similar to those ridiculous reality shows, their début, Not Saying / Just Saying is equally as addictive and far more entertaining. SOOOO have created a sound which is sandwiched between the childish glee of the Go! Team and the intensity of MSTRKRFT.
Listening to the Shout Outs is like the first time you saw a doe eyed Will Ferrell blurt out awesome during a Saturday Night Live skit. The gag is pretty simple and juvenile, but like Ferrell’s delivery, the Shout Outs’ music is extremely contagious. Their synthesized rhythms and punk rock attitude demands repeated listening. Tongue in cheek tracks such as ‘Self Loathing Rulz’ and ‘Your Shitty Record Won’t Mix Itself’ are both hilarious and contagious. While ‘Chicken Soup for the Fuck You’ is probably one of the best uses of cowbell since Bruce Dickenson demanded it from the Blue Oyster Cult.
The Shout Outs describe their sound as volatile dance music. That statement alone undermines the experience that is Not Saying/Just Saying; more than that, it’s dance music for your inner geekdom. The buzz on this band is beginning to swell and expect to hear more from these electro rockers in the future.
