Paris Hilton may be the most reviled celebrity in the world today. Even other celebrities are coming out of the woodwork to question her assent to super-stardom. And even though her debut album, Paris, is surprisingly adequate, the question must be asked – how much did she actually have to do with it? Hilton coos and purrs her way through 11 sexed up tracks, hopping from R&B to the reggae groove of lead single ‘Stars Are Blind,’ but not once does she exhibit much of a singing voice, substituting in an allegedly sexy whisper for much of the album. In fact, on many songs – ‘Fightin’ Over Me’ comes to mind – she’s doing barely more than talking.

The indisputable star of the album is Scott Storch, who has previously worked with heavy hitters 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, and Beyonce. His production, and his undeniable ear for a hit-making hook, steer the album clear of being a total disaster, but if Hilton has any commitment to being a true singer – which, of course, is in question – she’s going to have show some voice to go along with all that skin.
