It’s easy to take shots at Lillix. It would be even easier to avoid Inside the Hollow altogether. We’ve all been subconsciously trained to be suspicious of a group of four girls posing with their instruments and playing power-pop tunes. Are they really playing? Are they really singing? Did they even write these songs? When it comes to Lillix, the answer to all of these questions is, thankfully, yes.

The truth is, Lillix isn’t all that unlike a modern day Bangles: a self-contained, self-sustaining band, that exists despite our instinctive reaction to write them off. On top of that, they write with a confidence that defies their age, especially on tracks like the driving ‘Every Girl’ and the Annie Lennox-like ‘Wishing Well.’ And – of the utmost necessity these days – the girls blend enough humour in with their angst that their disaffectedness comes with just a hint of self-awareness; something other teenage bands are severely lacking.

Inside The Hollow is only Lillix’s second CD, but the monumental leap forward in songwriting is something to behold. Certainly a promising album, and one of the most pleasant surprises of 2006.
