“Classic rock is so outdated.” These are the words of ska/punk band Less Than Jake on the lead single ‘Overrated’ off their new album In With the Out Crowd. Let’s not discuss the irony of a ska band calling out an entire genre, much less classic rock – so named because of the simple fact that it’s old. In fact, LTJ seem perfectly aware that ska has become a universal rock and roll punch line; they all but drop the genre from their first new release since 2003.

Instead, the band experiments – if you can call it that – with the same kind of pop-punk that’s made bands like Sum 41 huge crossover stars. They only really break out the horns in earnest on a couple of songs, and even then they aren’t really in full blown ska mode. The veteran band comfortably breeze through 12 songs of hook-heavy, chorus driven material, but the album as a whole lacks teeth. Fans won’t be disappointed, but new ones won’t be signing up in droves.
