On Feedback’s opening track, Jurassic 5 proclaim that “I got my mind on back in the day.” They aren’t kidding. J5’s love of all things old school is both the best and worst thing about their first new album since 2002. Much of the subject matter is dedicated to “my skills are better than your skills” bravado, which can be a little bit grating, but is still a pleasant reminder of when things were much simpler in the rap game. Old school phrases like “flip the script” and “here’s a little story that must be heard” can’t help but bring nostalgic smiles to your face.

Of note is the remarkably un-street collaboration with the Dave Matthews Band on ‘Work It Out,’ which is both bands’ best material in years. The track is a nice respite from the theme of the album, and Matthews himself sounds more energized than on his last three records combined. Beyond that, this is Jurassic 5 as we’ve come to know them. They sound like they’re having a great time, but they just don’t seem to have much left to say.
