If there were ever two bands that had nothing in common, they were AC/DC and The Beatles. That is, until now. Australian-born rockers Jet jump so frenetically between their two and seemingly only influences, that you never know exactly what you’re going to get. Well, that’s not entirely true. You know exactly what you’re going to get, and it’s one of two things. You just aren’t sure which.
The one thing blatantly evident throughout the band’s second album, Shine On, is that they are much more successful ripping off their fellow countrymen. The AC/DC-biting riffs of ‘Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is’ and ‘That’s All Lies’ are serviceable rock anthems – not about to start the world on fire, but at least enough to start a party. The band falters, and badly, on ‘Bring It On Back’ and ‘Kings Horses,’ where the band earns the nickname bestowed upon them by their hometown of Melbourne – the Shitty Beatles.
At the end of the day, Jet is just harmless fun. Their songs make for a good soundtrack for an alcohol fuelled Friday night, but the lack of authenticity is ultimately a huge turn-off.
