Great Big Sea’s newest release, a CD/DVD package, marks another success in authentic Canadian music. A compilation of live songs from a month-long tour of North America, Courage & Patience & Grit delivers another high-energy, spirited performance from the band.
The goal of the album, as stated by producers, is to convey the feeling that “for a couple of hours, everyone is from Newfoundland or wants to be.†They are successful in this feat. You can picture the small Newfoundland fishing towns and taste the half-full pints of beer as you listen to the charming sounds of the fiddle, tin whistle and bouzouki fill the air.
Some of the band’s great classics (‘When I’m Up’ and ‘The night Pat Murphy Died’) sound even better live, while the folk vibe is enhanced with songs about horses, boats, mermaids and a personal favorite, ‘Scolding Wife’: “If the devil’d take her / I’d thank him for his pain / I swear to God I’ll hang meself if I get married again.â€
The only fault is that not all of the songs on the DVD are also included on the CD. If they were, this could have been the essential Great Big Sea release.
