G. Love, the world’s foremost purveyor of blues based hip-hop, returns with Lemonade, a slightly more mellow approach to his familiar genre-bending. This time around, the enigmatic singer dabbles in sun-drenched melodies and is helped along by big name guests like Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, and Blackalicious.

While Lemonade doesn’t have the punch of some of his earlier work, it is still a mighty display of G. Love’s confidence in doing things his way. Lemonade has less to do with hip-hop than it does with traditional R&B. ‘Ain’t That Right’ and ‘Can’t Go Back to Jersey’ are both soulful enough to be Temptations songs, but with enough bite that they aren’t derivative. Mix in the street cred that comes with having Blackalicious’ Gift of Gab and Lateef the Truth Speaker on a couple of tracks, and G. Love shows little weakness in his global appeal.
