Eight months after the fan fare of an unexpected reunion with his Pink Floyd cohorts at the Live 8 concert in London, England, David Gilmour is trying to make his own presence felt again with his third solo release, and first in sixteen years, On an Island.
It is impossible to say that a member of Pink Floyd lacks creativity, but for many of the songs on the album there is an immediate image of a Pink Floyd classic screaming out at you. Gilmour seems to be, at least for the first half of the record, relying a little to heavily on the mold he created for himself as a member of Pink Floyd.
All that being said however, Pink Floyd made great music and following the pattern that they developed so many years ago doesn’t, by any stretch of the imagination, make the music on this album bad. Originality only comes in to question here because we expect it so much from Gilmour.
The album opens with it’s only instrumental number then carries on with the title track, which is the album’s strongest, boasting a pair of excellent instrumental breaks that, although not as intense, are somewhat reminiscent of ‘Comfortably Numb.’ The album is mostly slow paced, and without a couple well placed pick-me-ups like ‘This Heaven’ and ‘Take a Breath,’ might be too much so. Otherwise we get what we would expect, strong vocals and excellent guitar leads, both touches that the veteran proves he hasn’t lost.
