Brian McKnight’s goal is clear just seconds into his new album, Ten – he wants to bring back the sexiness of ‘60s Motown. Unfortunately, it’s harder than it might seem to keep up with the Ushers and Timberlakes of the world, and Ten comes off as a mostly derivative set of songs that alternate between club-ready sex-offs and syrupy ballads.
McKnight’s lover-man persona is somewhat hampered by the fact that he’s nearly 40 years old. Much of the album sounds creaky and forced, and double-entendres like ‘Find Myself In You’ are more revolting than sexy. He’s more at home on ‘What’s My Name,’ a sleepy Lite FM ballad more suited to elevators than bedrooms.
McKnight can surely sing, but the R&B game seems to have passed this veteran by. Isn’t this about the time in his career when he’s supposed to denounce his earlier work and put out a gospel album?
