You have got to give him props for surviving through decades of musical evolution. Yusuf Islam, the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens, has released a new album, An Other Cup, after a long absence from the music business.

However, if you’ve been with him since the beginning, you may find yourself searching for traces of his former self in the new album, and left unsatisfied.

A mainly acoustic album, An Other Cup has a mellow flow. Yusuf’s songs deal mainly with spirituality and inner peace, but isn’t preachy. In his older age, he definitely has a wearier outlook. Instead of cautioning that it’s a “wild world”, his opening song advises to just “avoid the city after dark” altogether. His songs are meaningful and his approach still endearing, but it’s clear he’s not the young cat we once knew.

That being said, the cover of Nina Simone’s ‘Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood’ is entrancing, and ‘I Think I See the Light’ breathes life and a little funk into the album.
