Growing up in the post-Nirvana era, many of today’s younger artists learned to integrate the soft sincerity of post-punk and new wave with the ferocity and harshness of punk rock, hardcore and heavy metal. Like their contemporaries Alexisonfire, Canadian rockers Sylvie have this uncanny ability to build tension throughout a song until it bursts into a chaotic blend of soaring guitars, fanatical drumming and anthemic, anguish-filled screams. Most of the tracks on the group’s sophomore effort An Electric Trace follow this pattern, especially the album’s strongest cuts ‘Shopping Isles,’ ‘Mid Laugh,’ ‘Alert’ and the closer ‘Small Differences.’ Easily superior to their debut album, 2002’s I Wish I was Driving, Sylivie’s An Electric Trace is such an exhilarating record it will only take one or two listens to draw you in and convert you into a life long Sylvie disciple.
