Sevendust – The Best of Sevendust (Chapter One: 1997-2004)

Another best-of collection hitting stores in the month of December is almost enough to make music collectors go into hibernation until next year – especially considering the latest of those releases is from the largely mediocre metal band Sevendust. But not so fast. The Best of Sevendust is a very worthwhile showcase of everything Sevendust does well – blending crunching riffs and scorching screams with the occasional gentle melody.

That being said, if you aren’t paying close attention, these songs will blend into each pretty seamlessly – the occasional glance to confirm that you are on a different track is necessary. The standouts on this album are the songs selected from early in Sevendust’s career. ‘Black,’ ‘Bitch’ and ‘Too Close To Hate’ are easily the three most pleasantly surprising songs on this retrospective, the only problem being that they all come from the band’s 1997 self-titled album. After that, the songs lose their intensity, and start to rehash some of the same ideas.

While not mind-boggingly good, this album makes a strong case for Sevendust as better than anyone thought they were.
