It’s been three years since Ok Go first made waves with their hit single “Get Over It,†which was a catchy tune to be sure, but somewhat pegged the band as a coattail rider of the new wave of garage rock bands. Based on recent photos, it seems as though the band has aged exponentially since then, and their new music serves as further proof of this. The band tries desperately to recapture the boundless energy that made them appealing on their debut, but Oh No feels more forced than anything else.
There is one really great song on Oh No, and tellingly, it’s the slowest song on the record. “Oh Lately it’s so Quiet†is a perfect example of what Ok Go is capable of. The song builds slowly with a mellow funk beat, and shows the band pacing themselves, something that they don’t show a knack for on the rest of the album.
Aside from this pleasant surprise, Oh No isn’t good and it isn’t bad. It just kind of exists. The band attempts to go full speed ahead throughout almost the entire album, a la Hot Hot Heat, but there is an intangible element missing that just makes the album feel short on energy.
