Let’s get the obvious out of the way: releasing a condensed version of a box set with a few unreleased tracks is an obvious money-grab. The people (or person) in charge of Kurt Cobain’s legacy have likely left him rolling in his grave. A best-of, a box set, an unfortunate decision to release his journals, and now this. We know that this isn’t what Cobain intended when he put a shotgun to his head over eleven years ago.

With that in mind, there’s still the business of trying to look at Sliver: The Best of the Box with a discerning eye, which in all honestly, is difficult to do. To call it the best of the With The Lights Out box set is an interesting conundrum, as the debate rages on about whether the set was an incredible compilation of one of the most important bands of our generation, or a showcase of their deficiencies as musicians. Much of it was of such poor quality, that it would be all but ignored by any sane music exec today looking for the next big thing. Kurt, shrieking wildly and strumming an out of tune guitar, is often times more annoying than brilliant. So how then do we decide what’s the ‘best’ of the collection? One thing is certain, With The Lights Out, while not always enjoyable to listen to, was an interesting historical study of a band that would go on to greatness. Unfortunately, it was nothing more than that.

With that being said, Sliver is totally unnecessary. People either loved or hated With The Lights Out, but the thing is, any Nirvana fan worth his salt has heard it. If Cobain taught his fans anything, its to be too smart for the obvious marketing scheme that his legacy has become.
