Trent Reznor is the master of the hype machine. Waiting about five years between every album, it seems that Reznor is almost an afterthought until he emerges with brand new material, and the salivating begins. Unfortunately, the six year wait in between 1999’s The Fragile and this year’s With Teeth was hardly worth it. After half a decade, you would expect an artist to come up with something innovative, if not a new sound entirely. Instead, With Teeth is a rehashing of almost every sound and every lyric that Reznor has come up with since his ‘94 breakthrough, Downward Spiral.
The disappointing thing about With Teeth is that it sounds exactly like you would expect it to sound. There is literally nothing surprising about the album, and while it may be fun to hear new material from NIN, the fun quickly fades. Lyrically, there is nothing on the album that separates Reznor from the rap-rockers of a few years ago, as most of the album sounds like bad poetry from a 14-year-old’s diary. In fact, the rhymes on the opener All the Love in the World are so obvious, that Reznor doesn’t even bother to sing them, and just moves on to the next line.
There are a few moments of intensity and energy on With Teeth, such as lead single The Hand That Feeds, but the majority of the album is severely lacking in emotion. See you in five years, Trent.
