What I Came Here For is an introductory EP from Huddersfield, England band Mary-Jane. A three piece punk outfit, the band is led by singer/bassist Teri Flynn, who is flanked by guitarist Rachel Goulding and drummer Ben Carter. Any female punk singer in this day and age is going to held up to the high standards of the Distillers’ Brody Dalle, and while Flynn predictably fails to match Dalle’s intensity, she makes a pretty good case for herself as understudy.
The album serves as a good introduction to a promising band, but too often the songs are lost to low production value and bad mixing. Flynn’s vocals are often drowned out by too-loud drums, and it’s hard to sift through the ambience and find the songs themselves. Fans of the Distillers’ should definitely check out this English counterpoint to the American originals, but What I Came Here For is only a whisper compared to what this band is capable of.
