The fact that an album with only remixes and b-sides is so remarkable is a testament to Death From Above 1979 and their collaborators. Romance Bloody Romance is comprised of 13 tracks – 8 unique remixes of Black History Month and Romantic Rights, 1 cover and 4 separate b-sides. Considering the holiday season, RBR has the potential to be the sonic equivalent of a rock hard fruitcake. Instead this is a standout record in a holiday season typically notorious for mediocre cash grabs disguised as greatest hits collections.

One needs only listen to the four remixes of Black History Month to understand the album’s quality and diversity. Transforming from a smutty disco number (Alan Braxe & Fred Falke Remix) into a creepy sinful trip (QOTSA’s Josh Homme Remix) then suddenly into an ass-kicking distortion assault (Sammy Danger Remix) finally closing out the disc as a poppy symphonic arrangement (Girl on Girl featuring Final Fantasy Revision). Four remixes creating four unique offspring, and not a single disappointment. That is not to discredit the other mind-blowing tracks on this disc, like the ass shaking Little Girl the hallow-sleaziness of Romantic Rights (Dahlback Remix) or the German nihilist blitzkrieg of Blood on our Hands.

RBR can be taken as either a reward to DFA 1979’s loyal fans or an attempt to seduce more music lovers. Either way, it is an exhilarating treat during a very mediocre holiday season; a perfect gift to close out 2005.
